The Rich History of Downtown El Cajon, Upcoming Tour of Knox House Museum

Being an El Cajon native, I have seen the Knox House Museum while driving down Magnolia Avenue all of my life.  I have never stopped to see what it is all about.  Did you know that :

The KNOX HOUSE MUSEUM is the first commercial building in El Cajon, erected eleven years after the end of the Civil War.

Amaziah Lord Knox was the Founder of Knox's Corners,  which later became El Cajon.

In 1870 gold was found in Julian, Mr. Knox built his hotel in 1876 and it became the popular overnight spot between growing downtown San Diego and Julian.

These are just a fraction of the fun facts available at the El Cajon Historical Society's website, packed with historical photos, personal stories, virtually tons of great information about our town's history.

I can't believe that in over 50 years I've never known any of this, I'm going to visit this historical site and take my kids as well.  Getting caught up in day to day happenings it's interesting to look back on the rich history of where I work and live, how it came to be, and the people that made it happen.

Special opportunity to tour the Knox House Museum this Saturday, October 15.

Tours of Knox House Museum: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. October 15 at
280 N. Magnolia Ave., El Cajon.

Learn how Amaziah Knox became known as the founder of El Cajon. Special
exhibit of jars and bottles.

Free. Info/events: or

They say good things are worth waiting for.  I can only imagine how that resonates with the folks behind the El Cajon Brewing Company, it has been a long time coming, but the doors are about to open!

Chairs are waiting to be positioned, big screen tv's are ready for some football (and other sports in the bar I suspect) along with no less than 40 draft beers on tap!  There is excitement in the air, and much anticipation in the El Cajon community, Downtown is ready to welcome our new restaurant/brewery.

They have been doing a good job of keeping you up to date with their progress, 'like' their Facebook page to keep informed.
